With summer in full swing, the idea of accessorizing may just be a bit too much to handle in the heat. Who wants to think about — let alone wear — layers of jewelry, tight belts, and uncomfortable shoes, all for the sake of a “look” on a sweltering day? However, the right accessories can make a simple tank top and shorts into a chic little look without much effort. Here’s a rundown of some classic add-ons for just about any outfit this summer.
First, the quintessential summer tote — a straw bag. You can go with a classic sand-colored weave beach bag or have fun with a drawstring crossbody version in a vibrant color. Straw bags are great for running errands or hauling essentials for day trips. If straw feels a bit too beach-bummy for your taste, then check out soft leather totes. A logo-less leather or faux-leather bag can be just as functional as a woven version but will add a bit more polish to your summertime style.
Next up is the all-American baseball hat, which isn’t just for the ballpark but can be worn for most occasions all summer long. Baseball hats add a cool touch to your relaxed looks and provide some sun coverage. Take a simple white tee and your favorite jeans to the next level with a new sporty hat.
Or, if you prefer more laidback headgear, there are crocheted bucket hats. A new twist on the standard sun hat, a crocheted bucket version isn’t as overwhelming as a circle hat and gives that same tee and jeans a more boho feel. Plus, if it’s just too hot to blow-dry and style your hair, slapping on a hat will save you some time in the morning.
Going into hot, sunny months, we all need sunglasses to protect our eyes. This summer, I’m liking aviator styles, which can make a bold statement even with simple outfits. Aviators are particularly on-trend thanks to this little movie you may have heard about, “Top Gun: Maverick.” You can channel Kelly McGillis from the original in a white button-down and black shorts with gold-rimmed aviators. Or, if you are a true fan of the new film, push it to the style limit with a flight suit-inspired romper and sleek sunnies.
Even though you may not think it, belts are a dynamic summer accessory. A strong belt can transform basic pieces into a fuller look. When wearing loose trousers and a cotton tank, adding a belt brings these pieces together in an outfit. Throw on a linen blazer, and you are set for a casual office. Outside of work, sans blazer, you’re keeping cool but still somewhat professional. Belts are also a great way to play around with changing up the silhouette for flowing shifts and slouchy shirtdresses. A wide belt at the waist for a cinched fit, a skinny belt under the bust for an empire waist, or a long-slung buckle belt around the hips are all options to try.
Another unexpected summer add-on is a twilly scarf. A twilly is a long and narrow scarf, preferably made from silk. There are dozens of unique uses for a colorful twilly scarf. It can be worn as a neck scarf, used as a headband or around a ponytail, tie it to a handbag, or as a belt, to name a few. A twilly-style scarf gives a neutral outfit a little twist, literally! Not feeling a fancy silk scarf for summer? I also like a good old-fashion bandana as a style accessory. Like a twilly, you can wear bandanas as headbands, headwraps, or around a ponytail. And I love the functional aspect of wearing it like a neckerchief to catch a bit of perspiration or as a bracelet that can double as a napkin or tissue if needed.
Finally, feet! Sneakers, sandals, flip flops, and the best shoes in summer are easy to wear. For both ease and style, I like the platform sandal. They have the wearability of a flat with a subtle touch of height. They come as slide-ons or with straps, so think about how much walking you’ll be doing if deciding between these two styles. For an evening out, a slide sandal works with a midi-length summer dress. For a day full of activities, jean shorts (belted), a tee-shirt, and Velcro-strapped flatforms will see you through stylishly.
Summer is all about fun; if you can look good while having it, all the better. And with the above-suggested accessories, looking good can be pretty easy.
