Warm Weather Fashion Mistakes

With spring in full swing and summer here before you know it, you’ve already probably started switching out your cold-weather clothes for warm-weather apparel. Goodbye overcoats, hello flip-flops! Chunky knits can take a long-awaited break and give their lighter-weight colleagues a turn at keeping your shoulders covered. With this closet switcheroo, it’s a good time to survey your summer wardrobe and make your list of needs and wants for your outfitting requirements this upcoming season. Keeping that list in mind, let’s take a moment to review some of the common styling, dressing, and outfitting mistakes of warm weather.

I was recently talking with my sister-in-law about sunglasses, and she mentioned she was in the market for a pair of aviators. Switching up your sunglass style is a subtle yet chic way to welcome summer. The big mistake a lot of people make is choosing the wrong sunglasses silhouette for their face shape. In general, round and square faces should choose rectangular frames. Oval and triangular faces look best with square glasses. Round frames suit all face shapes; they are kind of like the universal donor of sunglasses. Not sure of your face shape? For the most part, an oval face is taller than it is wide, while round faces look more like a circle. If your forehead is wider than your jaw, you have a heart-shaped face, while square faces have broad jawlines. As for my sister-in-law, I told her to go for the aviators; they’ll add a bit of edge to even the most causal of summer looks.

Speaking of casual, it doesn’t get more low-key than sporting sneakers and cut-offs; however, sneakers are becoming more ubiquitous with dressier looks. Don’t think of sneakers as only for the weekend or the gym. Athletic-style shoes can be worn with dresses and even some tailored pieces. Freshen up your summer office wear with a bright white sneaker, or pair a gingham dress with pastel slip-ons instead of sandals. Just make sure your sneakers are un-scuffed and clean.

Another shoe misstep that often occurs in summer is wearing the wrong heel. Even though it may be tempting to strap on those high-heeled sandals for summer events, more often than not, you’ll experience “sunken heel syndrome.” That’s when your heels pierce the ground and get stuck. It’s happened to the best of us. So, for outdoor happenings this season, opt for block or wedged heels to give you a little lift without leaving you in a lurch.

For the most part, people don’t wear all black in the summer, even though I wouldn’t argue against a black linen shift dress or black tank top. What you want to avoid are all-black accessories. Black shoes and a black bag can weigh down a summer look. Instead, opt for colorful pieces with neutral outfits, like a pink sandal and purse set with a white tee and beige pull-on pants. Or freshen up that black linen dress with pastel or neon pieces. And don’t feel you need to match your shoes to your bag. Especially with a minimalist outfit, mixing things up with different color or pattern combinations allows your accessories to be fun and make a statement.

There are a lot of interesting trends for summer 2021, like oversized jeans, fringe, ruffles, and asymmetrical designs. And while some of these trends can be fun, you don’t want to make the mistake of wearing complicated silhouettes. Simple, sleek styles focusing more on classic vs. trendy is your best bet for the summer. Too many bells and whistles can make an outfit uncomfortable, particularly on those sweltering days come July and August. Also, be aware of material. Trendier pieces on the cheap tend to come in unbreathable fabrics. You want to wear natural fibers like cotton and linen in minimal silhouettes to stay as cool as can be expected.

Lastly, when it comes to summer, you should not only be mindful of outfit mistakes but also makeup mishaps. A full face of makeup can quickly turn into a sweaty, runny, melty mess as summer ramps up. Substitute thick concealer with a light BB cream and black eyeliner with brown. Opt for a more natural shade of lipstick, or simply use gloss without a lipliner for a breezy beauty look. Don’t forget to swap your perfume as well. Go for clean, lighter scents this season, and if it’s really hot, skip scent. Deodorant and soap will make you feel good enough and smell nice wherever you go!
