Dresses for Everyone

Spring always brings with it a sense of hope and renewal, and this year we definitely need as much of that as we can get. Along with everything starting to bloom, the days getting longer, and the chill slowly ebbing, this time of year also means dress season has begun! As we come out of our sweatpants-loungewear-knitwear hibernation, there are so many styles of dresses that are easy to wear and will help you blossom, sartorially speaking. Here are some of my favorite styles for every age and body shape.

First up, shirtdresses. This go-to frock can be worn in so many ways. Belted, not belted, on its own, layered with a turtleneck, tank top, cardigan, or jacket. Or worn open as a third piece with jeans or leggings. I love the idea of a gingham shirtdress for spring and summer, worn with flat sandals and a crossbody bag. A more traditional pinstriped shirtdress makes getting dressed for the office easy with loafers and a blazer. If looking to add a shirtdress to your closet, look for one with pockets and a removable belt. Those with attached fabric sashes or drawstrings can be limiting. A removable fabric belt allows you to swap it out with a leather belt or a vintage necktie as a belt. And of course, you can leave off the belt and wear it loose.

No springtime wardrobe is complete without a flowy maxi dress. It’s a whole outfit in one piece. Just throw it on, put on some shoes and sunscreen, and you’re good to go. A decent maxi will also lend itself to statement jewelry if you feel like glamming it up. Of course, it makes a statement all on its own whether you’re just hanging around the house or venturing out and about. I’m a fan of printed maxis in bohemian-inspired patterns, but a solid-colored version works just as well. No matter your size, you do want a dress with some shape to avoid looking like you’re wearing a sack, or worse, a nightgown. Maxis can also double as a swimsuit coverup come summer!

Regardless of the season, one can never go wrong with a classic wrap dress. This silhouette is so flattering and works for all occasions. Wear a seersucker wrap with sneakers and a sunhat for a simple picnic, a puffy-sleeved wrap in an eye-catching print for church services, or a geometric patterned cocktail-length wrap dress for a work presentation. You really can’t go wrong where or however you don this dress style. I prefer a wrap dress that hits just below the knee, anything shorter may not have enough skirt material for adequate coverage.

Most spring and summer wardrobes would not be complete without a breezy sundress. A light and airy minidress is almost a survival tool for those summer days where the heat and humidity just won’t quit. Technically, a mini is anything above the knee, so you have a variety of lengths to play with depending on how much of your gams you’re comfortable exposing. If you love your legs, then show ‘em off in this type of flirty frock. Look for options in natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and if you can find one with pockets, more power to you. This dress also makes for a stylish bathing suit coverup.

Another great sundress option is mid-length tank dresses. You can wear them with a sweater here in the spring, then throw it on and go when summer arrives. Tank dresses can be found with empire waists for a flattering fit, voluminous easy-going silhouettes, or in jersey A-line cuts that skim the body. There are also body-con options if you prefer a more fitted look. Tank dresses go with everything from sneakers to heeled strappy sandals, and like shirtdresses above can be belted for a more polished look, or just worn as is to keep things causal.

I know that not everyone considers themselves a dress person. In prior years, dresses meant hosiery, shapewear, formal shoes, and the need to carry a purse yadda yadda yadda. But this season, dresses are finally comfortable and require less work to wear. And dresses aren’t just for younger women. A shirtdress, wrapdress, maxi dress, these styles are for every age and body shape, and are meant to make you feel good about yourself, not uncomfortable or awkward. This season, if you already have a closet full of frocks, it’s time to whirl them out. If you’re new to dresses, why not give one of these silhouettes a chance? Who knows you may find your go-to look for spring!
