Summer Sweaters

The phrase “summer sweaters” may seem counterintuitive, if not a bit ridiculous, with the days growing longer and temperatures rising as we head toward the 4th of July. However, with air conditioning and breezy summer nights, it’s not a bad idea to keep a lightweight knit on hand to combat summer goosebumps. Plus, by incorporating a few summer sweaters into your wardrobe, you can mix up your warm-weather outfits. Here are a few sweater styles and ways to wear them to add some versatility to your go-to summer looks.

I am a huge fan of stripes — from t-shirts, to button-downs, to dresses — I’ll take stripes in any form. For summer, I love a blue and white striped pullover with a pair of white denim shorts and boat shoes for a classic nautical look. Whether you own a boat or not, you can’t go wrong with Talbot’s cotton roll neck sweater in ivory and indigo. For something a bit slouchier, check out Old Navy’s crochet v-neck pullover in both stripes and solid shades.

Speaking of slouchy, now is the perfect time to bust out a Baja hoodie. Great for the beach, camping, or just sitting around the fire pit. Walmart features authentic Mexican Baja hoodies for both men and women. Paired with your favorite cutoffs, super soft t-shirts, and flipflops this beachy woven pullover will keep you cozy while channeling a surfer-chic aesthetic. Or, check out Bass Pro Shops’ Natural Reflections collections, which features both hoodies and cardigans in Baja-inspired stripes. Wear them over cargo shorts and hiking boots for your next outdoor adventure.

For dressier occasions, be sure to pair your favorite sundress with a bright cropped cardigan. Loft Outlet has a pointelle shrug sweater in a gorgeous teal, as well as in neutral tones, to top off a floral mini dress. Kohl’s also has a variety of cropped knits, from crocheted boleros to wear with maxi-dresses, to scalloped trimmed cardigans for a more office-appropriate option.

If you’re feeling adventurous why not try tie-dye! You can DIY this style and bring an old sweatshirt some exuberance or check out a French terrycloth version from the Gap. Either way, a tie-dye pullover goes great with jeans or activewear.

For those of you who may have lived through the first wave of this hippy trend and aren’t feeling the need to revisit, consider ombre as a sophisticated alternative. Macy’s Style & Co. cotton ombre sweatshirt with a loose fit and scoop neckline can be a vibrant knit for ladies of a certain age looking to make a statement. In deep blue tones that transition to white, this knit can be thrown over a sleeveless button-down and cropped pants when you need a bit more coverage.

For a different type of vintage vibe, check out ModCloth.com’s short sleeve sweater collection. Short sleeve knits are a great summer staple; a chevron print with high-waisted denim evokes a 70’s summer style. Or pair a polo knit with tennis shorts or a skort for a sporty take on casual wear.

Tropical printed sweaters and sweatshirts are made for summer. Billabong’s wild palm fleece is a great pop-on piece against the chills of a sudden rainstorm. Wear it over a tank top and joggers to elevate your loungewear. For going out, consider Chico’s palm-print open-weave pull over. With its relaxed fit and bateau neckline, it pairs beautifully with linen trousers and slide-on sandals for a chic drinks-on-the-patio look.

Dusters are a functional, yet stylish, lightweight knit for summer. Lane Bryant’s textured kimono with its flowy drape and super-soft fabric is flattering and comes in a vibrant tropical yellow that pairs perfectly with a drawstring romper and wedged espadrilles. Target’s open stitch cardigan comes in earth tones and adds a stylish layer to your racerback tank and culotte chinos.

No matter the silhouette or print, all summer sweaters should be rendered in a light or open knit. Save your chunky and bulkier pieces for fall/winter. You’ll also want a looser shape to capture that laidback summertime vibes.

So, whether you’re naturally cold-blooded, or you simply want the look of a sweater, the wealth of stylish summer sweaters out there means you’ll have plenty of options to update your warm-weather wardrobe.
