Work From Home Wardrobe

It has been an interesting time for all of us, especially if you find yourself working from home under less than ideal circumstances. Having worked from home sporadically over the years, the idea of typing away all day in pajamas may sound appealing, but, by Day Two, it can actually become quite a drag. From technical snafus to childcare needs, to how upset your cat is from having people in her house all day, what you’re wearing is the least of your concerns. However, dressing for work, even if your office is now your couch, can help you from falling into a mental rut. Getting yourself dressed, even casually, will help prepare your mind and body for the day’s work ahead.

First, you want to be comfortable. But comfortable does not mean careless, so change out of your PJs before you start work. I prefer loungewear for remote work. There’s nothing wrong with yoga pants and a t-shirt, it just shouldn’t be the yoga pants and tee you slept in. Since gyms are closed, and exercise classes are on hiatus, feel free to wear workout gear if it’s comfortable for you. I’m also a big fan of wearing knit pants, especially if they have pockets, with button-down flannels, and comfy slipper socks when accessing my remote desktop from home. Leggings with sweatshirts, sweatpants with sweaters, and joggers with tunics are all great pairings and comfortable options for working from home. Just be sure your garments are clean and stain-free. The idea that you’re ready to take on the day is hampered if you’re putting on dirty clothes.

Speaking of clean, while you may not need to shower every day when you’re working from home, you shouldn’t go more than two days between showers. Besides being good hygiene, which we all should be practicing, keeping your body and hair clean helps you keep your mind better organized and spirits up. And, one of the advantages of working at home is the chance to catch up on laundry; just throw in a load in between emails.

For days when you have to make a virtual appearance via Skype Calls or Microsoft Teams meetups, you’ll want to put in a bit more effort, at least from the waist up. I really like turtlenecks, either in a neutral like black or a bright color like red. They are simple, sophisticated, comfortable, and flattering. Let’s face it, the camera on most laptops can hit you at a less than ideal angle, so having some neck coverage is not a bad idea. Regardless about how you feel about your neck, virtual meeting attire can be a basic button-up shirts and jeans, or if you’re running the meeting, you may want to throw on a blazer. Stripes are also an easy way to stand out on screen. You don’t need to apply a full face of makeup, but maybe a bit of lip color, again just to pop a bit. Be sure to keep kids and dogs secured during these sessions.

If you’re feeling a bit frumpy, try adding some jewelry to your working from home look. I’m not suggesting anything statement-making or chunky, but a simple stud earring, delicate gold necklace, or even a watch can elevate your loungewear and your mood. Same goes for beauty: Paint your nails, brush your hair, or wear a bit of eyeliner/mascara. This way, if you have to make a quick grocery run, or just want to take a walk for some much-needed fresh air, you’re a bit more presentable.

Lastly, don’t forget about footwear. Slippers are great, as are the aforementioned slipper socks, but they may not be as supportive for all-day wear. I became a big fan of house shoes as a first time Mom, while on maternity leave. Slip-on sneakers, moccasins, or sandals with rubber soles are all great for working from home. Easy on-and-off is key as you want to be able to slip into and out of your house shoes in case you want to cozy up under a blanket or want to grab a quick shower.

I hope everyone is staying safe, healthy, and sane. Good luck!
