One of the most challenging things about going to the gym and exercising is finding the time and motivation to do it. The second biggest challenge is how not to look or smell like a total mess after your workout. Ideally, you’d be able to take a full shower, style hair, and apply makeup after each sweat session, but, in the real world, that’s rarely the case. Most often after the gym, you may have to return to work, or run errands, or pick up kids, or all of the above, then get home and make dinner before you can hit the showers. For those days when you can’t clean up post-workout here are some go-to products to help you refresh and de-sweat.
If you use nothing else, I sure hope you at least apply deodorant pre- and post-workout. Yes, even before your warm-up stretches, swipe on some deodorant or antiperspirant to help combat sweat during your gym routine. Dove’s 0% Aluminum Deodorant, as the name suggests contains, zero aluminum or alcohol and comes in four scents like cucumber & green tea, and coconut & pink jasmine. Or, you can go the old school route, with Lady Speed Stick for an invisible dry shield that won’t rub off on your clothes.
For a quick shower alternative, try cooling wipes. Duke Cannon’s Cold Shower Cooling Field Towel is a face and body wipe that cleans as well as cools, with soothing menthol to help you cool down and recover after strenuous activity. The added bonus with this product is that a portion of proceeds benefit U.S. veterans! Or try Oars + Alps Natural Face and Body Wipes, which contain caffeine to help you fight that post-workout slump. Of course, in a pinch, you can use baby wipes, especially if your gym bag also doubles as your diaper bag, as it does for some of us.
Not a fan of wipes? Then try no-rinse cleansers like YUNI’s Flash Bath made with aloe vera to foam away sweat, dirt, and odor instantly. Just pump some foam into your hands and massage directly onto the skin. Or try Mustela No-Rinse Cleansing Water, which is actually a product geared toward babies and toddlers, but is great for adults with sensitive skin, and again can do double duty in those gym/diaper bag hybrids. You can use this cleansing water with paper towels or a washcloth to wipe away sweat and dirt on the go.
Once you have your body sorted, next up is face and hair. Depending on your hair length you may be able to simply run a wet comb through your post-workout ‘do and be on your way. For ladies with longer locks, a simple high bun or sleek pony will be enough to get you through the rest of your day. For those of us in between, re-styling sweaty hair can be tricky to downright impossible. First, towel off excess moisture from your hair by patting, not rubbing. Then try combing underneath the hair to regain some volume and body. Next, spritz on a dry shampoo, like Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo, which will absorb excess oil and sweat and help you maintain your blowout. Or, you can work with your sweaty tresses and create some waves with a texturizing spray, like Verb Sea Spray. With green tea and seaweed extracts, this refreshing spray formula cleans hair while also giving it a wavy boost.
Whether you go completely bare, or with a fully made-up face to the gym, chances are you’ll need a bit of a skin touch up post-exercise. An effective way to refresh your face after you’ve worked up a sweat is with hydrating facial mists. With or without makeup, a product like Mario Basescu’s Facial Spray with Aloe, Sage and Orange Blossom, will help you maintain a supple and smooth complexion, while also refreshing your foundation post-Pilates. Kiehl’s Cactus Flower & Tibetan Ginseng Hydrating Mist will hydrate your skin and help protect your face against environmental aggressors. Both products smell great and won’t smudge off your concealer.
If you find yourself having to do/re-do your makeup after hitting the gym, maximize your primp time with a 2-in-1 SPF and moisturizer. Aveeno Ultra-Calming Daily SPF 30 cream will help soothe your skin — if you’re anything like me, you may tend to get flushed and red-faced after that spin class or treadmill sprint — so anything that can help ease those rosy cheeks is a must-have. For an even better multi-tasking product, try a tinted lotion with SPF, like Burt’s Bees BB Cream, which is a makeup and moisturizer in one that also offers protection from sun damage. Combining a moisturizer and a hydrating spray will help your face appear dewy as opposed to sweaty, and together prep skin for cosmetics.
For those days when you’re really strapped for time, or just want to appear slightly more composed after your morning boot camp class, swipe on some mascara and brow gel — having lashes and eyebrows that really pop will draw people’s attention to your eyes and away from messy hair and inflamed complexion. CoverGirl’s Lash Blast Active Mascara provides instant volume, is sweat-proof, smudge-proof, and clump-proof for full lashes that last all day long. It’s even good enough to wear while you’re doing those burpees. For arches, try Revlon’s ColorStay Brow Fantasy brow pencil and gel. This will fill-in, shape, and set brows for a polished look that lasts all day long. Whether you’re a daily gym-goer, lifting weights at home, or power walking over lunch, we all need to refresh before moving on to the next task, meeting, grocery run, or to-do in our ever-busy lives. With a few swipes and splashes from the above products, you’ll be able to switch gears with a bit more ease and polish. And, if anyone asks your secret, tell them it’s all those endorphins you’ve built up from working out.
