Vacation Dressing

Tis the season for vacays, staycays, and slaycays! Whether you’re gearing up for your annual family road trip, plan on laying low at home, or are booking an epic adventure, chances are your vacation wardrobe may be in need of a refresh. The key to building stylish vacation outfits is versatility and balancing the practical with the trendy. Easier said, than done, right? Well here are a few outfit ideas to get you going!

First, start with basic pieces in coordinating colors that are rendered in a breathable fabric, like cotton and linen. Then incorporate seasonal staples, like straw hats and sandals that can be mixed and matched to complete your looks. From there, it’s a matter of experimenting with different outfit combinations and adding statement pieces to find your vacation style.

One method of vacation dressing I find myself using year after year is pairing bold and bright colors in one look. If you can’t wear eye-popping hues in summer, when can you? Splashy shades, like turquoise, vibrant red, and lemony yellow, will inject energy into any vacation outfit, no matter the destination. I really like the idea of finding a fun tropical or polka-dot printed skirt teeming with color and pairing with a neutral tank or tee. Or a flowy shift dress in a vivid stripe or chevron pattern. If prints aren’t your thing, consider swapping out your basic black knit maxi for a minty-green or teal version to don during your travels.

If you don’t feel like embracing statement colors, beachy neutrals always bring a breath of fresh air to vacation dressing, even if you aren’t headed to the shore. Think pinky beige, off-white, and of course seafoam blue. Garments in these minimal shades can be easily found in light-weight cotton and linen. Linen shirts, in particular, are super-versatile for vacation dressing. A cream-color linen tunic can be worn with cropped jeans and leather sandals as you travel to your destination. You can wear it as a cover-up at the beach or poolside, then tuck it into a pair of tailored cocktail shorts, worn with heeled sandals and some bangles for an evening of fancy drinks and dinner.

For more laidback trips, don’t feel you need to leave style at home. Instead, lean into your casual getaway and bust out this summer’s old-school trend tie-die! Yep, it’s the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, and this psychedelic pattern can be found in tees, tanks, sweatshirt, and socks! I love the idea of a tie-dye hoodie with jeans for nights camping out, or a tie-dye oversized tee with cutoff shorts and flip-flops for checking out the world’s largest ball of twine. Best of all, this trend is totally DIY and can bring new life to some faded white tees from last summer.

Another great pattern for summer is gingham. Whether as a pink-and-white button-down, or a ruffle crop-top, there’s a gingham garment for out there for everyone and every trip. A classic blue gingham sundress can look summery-chic whether you’re hitting the city sidewalk or the country road. The key is to pick the age-appropriate silhouette with this print. In general, the older you are, the more coverage you may require.

Lastly, consider packing matching sets as part of your vacation wardrobe. A matching set is basically like three outfits in one. Wear the two pieces together, then break them up. Create a second look with the top and jeans, then a third with the bottoms and a colorful shirt. Matching sets come in prints, bright colors, neutral tones, as well as various fabrics like cotton canvas, linen, or light-weight knits to meet all of your travel outfit needs.

No matter your vacation plans this summer, your vacation wardrobe should be versatile, comfortable, and easy to pack. And of course, above all have fun and don’t forget the sunblock!
