As I’ve gotten older, I’ve dressed less and less around the latest fashion trends and more to suit my own personal style and shape. Over the last five years, my shape has fluctuated with having two babies, so I’ve had to re-learn some basic techniques when it comes to dressing to flatter my figure. Here are some universal (and stylish) tips and tricks to dress flatteringly no matter your size.
First, be honest with your shape. Knowing your body and the silhouettes that work best with it will make it easier to highlight your assets. If you have a tiny waist, then fit n’ flare dresses are for you. If you have great legs, then above the knee-skirts are for you. If you’re busty, avoid turtlenecks. You may have to try things on to see how they work or don’t work, on your frame. Regardless of how a certain type of silhouette fits or doesn’t fit, be kind to yourself. It’s not you that is not suited to the garment; it’s the garment that’s not suited to you.
Once you have an idea of your silhouette, the right undergarments are key to define and support your shape. Of course, knowing how to wear shapewear can be tricky. Read the packaging, or check out user videos to see how best to incorporate support garments into your dressing. FYI, the straps on high-waisted Spanx shorts are meant to wrap around your bra straps. Take it from me; I learned that one the hard way.
Next up, create some contrast with color. Even though monochromatic looks are on trend right now, it’s much more flattering to have differing shades between your base and top layers. If your cardigan is light, try going with a darker tank or vice-versa. Dynamic color pairings enhance the body’s dimensions, instead of being one beige block. Think of a black camisole with a white or blush denim jacket. Or a white tee with a navy blazer. Bright-and-dark color combos have a visual pop that’s way more stylish than dressing in all black.
Speaking of color, don’t shy away from bright shades and prints. Pattern is where you can let your personality emerge through your most flattering silhouette. There’s the old saying: Once you find a great piece, buy it in every color. I tend to agree and would add that you buy it in every print that strikes your fancy. For me, that’s V-necked striped t-shirts. I have a variety, like white stripes on black, black stripes on white, navy stripes on white, white stripes on grey, etc. etc. Your print of choice can be polka dots, florals, chevron, or novelty prints like anchors or lemons. If you don’t have a signature go-to pattern, then try a few on to see what best suits you. Of course, you’re not limited to one; you can wear as many different types of print as you like.
Lastly, invest in accessories. You don’t have to have a ton of clothing, or an assortment of silhouettes, to mix up your style. Pendant necklaces, statement earrings, bangles, stacked rings, printed scarves, and of course, stylish shoes can take basic tops and jeans a long way on the style train. They will also bring a bit of polish to dresses of any color and can play up vibrant prints. Remember, no matter your size, you can always accessorize.
Of course, even if you have on the most fabulous dress with quality jewelry, the best thing you can do to flatter your shape is to keep your head held high and smile bright with confidence!
