They don’t call it sandal season for nothing! Summer was made for sandals and vice versa. This year, instead of just another pair of flip flops, consider exploring some new sandal trends and improving your style for this season’s rounds of parties, weddings, and drinks on the porch.
This year the barely-there sandal is the biggest trend for summer footwear. These “naked” shoes consist of a heeled sandal with very thin straps, or a clear PVC vamp. The barely-there sandal can be a mule, slingback, or even a T-strap, and the heel height ranges from kitten to stiletto styles. This is the perfect heel to dress up a pair of jeans and tee, or trouser-shorts and a sleeveless blouse. However, be warned these are by far the edgiest of sandals for summer and are best worn for indoor gatherings, or parties on consistent and even surfaces, like cement patios. These are not the shoes for a grassy picnic or destination wedding. Tread with caution.
Another sandal trend to try out this summer are platforms. Yes, this 70’s shoe is once again back in style, and with thicker straps and sturdier heels they are a much more walkable option than the naked sandal. You can go really bold with metallic versions of this shoe, paired with a minidress for evening soirées. Or, up your everyday seasonal style with a wooden heel and sole under a floral summer maxi.
If you’re more into classic looks, then you can never go wrong with the timeless espadrille. This woven shoe comes in a variety of silhouettes, from flat canvas slip-ons to wedge strappy heels. What makes this such an enduring shoe for summer is the plaited fiber sole, that is lightweight and adds a bit of unexpected texture to basic outfits. I recommend sporting espadrille with just about any look, from tanks and cut-offs, to linen culottes and sleeveless button-downs, to your favorite summer frock.
A more casual trend in summer shoes is sporty sandals. Think the sole of a sneaker with graphic Velcro straps. This shoe is great for weekend adventures, especially if you go with a waterproof option and flexible sole. However, if your summer weekends are more on the low-key side, a sporty sandal will give your casual wear a fun and stylish boost. Basically, if you’d normally wear flip-flops, consider a more supportive sporty shoe that will be functional–looking at you pool-side lounger–as well as stylish.
For any sandal, pedicures are a must. Not just for your nails, but to smooth out rough spots on the foot. You don’t want a beautiful new sandal to be marred by calloused heels and jagged nails. And, by all means, coordinate your polish with your shoes. You can go with a monochromatic tone, like red nails for a red platform. Or, opt for contrasting shades, like aquamarine and a neutral barely-there sandal. Personally, I like to pick a darker statement color, like magenta, that can go with every type of sandal, and keep reapplying all season long. Happy sandal season!
