Schedule makers had extinguished the Friday Night lights for the greater Williamsport high school football teams on the season’s fourth weekend as Loyalsock, Montoursville, South Williamsport and Williamsport all boarded buses for road trips of various lengths. South Williamsport had the shortest journey as the Mounties took their perfect 3-0 record onto the Muncy Indians reservation to face a tribe with an equally impressive record.

The two small-school squads had met on the gridiron for many seasons with the Mounties holding the upper hand in recent meetings, having won the previous seven games in the series. But this year’s meeting had a new twist with both teams coming in undefeated and ranked among the District’s top Class A teams. Area interest in the game could be attested to by the media coverage that included two radio stations, two newspapers, and Cable Sports/Webb Weekly Live all on hand.

The pre-game buzz seemed to favor the Mountaineers with many expecting a two or three touchdown margin for the visitors. But that thinking did not take into account the mindset of those youngsters wearing the dark blue & white. Coached by Sean Tetreault, they were determined to end the seven-year victory drought against their upriver rivals.

“We’ve talked about it all year,” Tetreault said. “There’s not going to be one guy doing all the work. We need our whole team to play a good game each week and play their positions, and it has been great to see them all doing their job. It shows when everyone makes plays. We knew we had to strap it up and be ready to go against South. The kids have taken ownership of it and have come out ready to play.”

While the Indian’s victory was truly a team effort, the player behind the center — wearing number 8 — was truly instrumental in his team’s success.

Many are familiar with the phrase ‘good enough for government work’ alluding to a belief that a job got done but not perhaps as efficient as it might have been. Well, on this September, Friday the 14th ‘good enough’ was more than enough to electrify the hometown faithful as Muncy quarterback Coleman Good ran, passed, and willed the Indians to a hard-fought 32-24 win, establishing themselves as a top contender for District playoff honors.

The 5’11”, 175-pound, four-year starting quarterback led his team in rushing (78 yards), passing (128 yards and 2 TDs), scored the game’s decisive touchdown with 1:24 left in the game, and was the inspirational force in silencing any doubters about this team’s will and its belief in achieving post-season glory.

While Good was the leader, Muncy running back Mike Kustanbauter contributed a game-high 14 tackles and rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns.

“This game was very important to us,” Kustanbauter stressed. “We’ve been working hard, and it was just a great team effort. I feel like they don’t give us enough credit. We’re hard-nosed. We can pass the ball, we can run the ball, and we have a great defense. They’re overlooking us.”

While not identifying who ‘they’ are, it is a safe bet that no one on the Indians remaining schedule will be overlooking them.

This Friday night the Indians return home to Stanley Schulyer Stadium to try and keep their perfect season alive when they host NTL and District Class A foe Canton. Should they survive unblemished, they will be certain favorites in their last four regular-season games against Montgomery, CMVT, Sayre, and Hughesville.

Good’s outstanding play against South Williamsport was yet another chapter in the gridiron legacy he is authoring with his play. He is closing in on his third consecutive 1,000-yard passing season and is a dual-threat signal caller, which makes Muncy’s rushing attack that much harder to defend. Defensively, Good has become one of the area’s top safeties and as a junior led the team with an average of eight tackles a game, including a career-high 15 tackles in last year’s game against the Mountaineers.

The week before the South Williamsport game it was Good’s late-game heroics that gave Muncy a 15-14 come-from-behind victory at Towanda. Good scored a touchdown as time expired and then hit Kustanbauter with a game-winning two-point conversion pass.

Muncy’s lofty goals are all still ahead of them; an undefeated season, a Northern Tier League championship and a District 4 Class A crown. Football excitement in the Muncy community is riding high as the season’s second half commences. While the final chapter is yet to be written, it is a good bet that Number 8’s effort will be Good enough!
