Skincare In Your 40s

Last year was my 20th high school reunion, so you can imagine how old I am. But, thanks to eating right, exercising, drinking water, and taking care of my skin, I don’t necessarily look like I’m closer to 40 than I am 30. Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. With seasonal changes, hormonal shifts, pollutants, sun exposure, and aging, your skin’s particular needs are constantly in flux. If you are in your 40s, or it’s on your horizon, consider adopting the following changes and products to your beauty routine.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. As you age, your skin will switch from being oil-prone during your 20s to dry and rough in your late 30s and 40s. Lack of moisture contributes to the appearance of lines and wrinkles, so there’s no time like the present to stock up on hydrating essentials. During the winter, you should be especially mindful that your beauty products are not stripping your skin of hydration. Cleansing oil, like Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing oil, will remove makeup and toxins while also locking in your natural moisture. Or try Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate as an overnight treatment to moisturize/repair your skin while you sleep.

Consider collagen. After 30, collagen production slows down, and your skin loses elasticity. To help regain that “snap back, ”two product types are fairly effective and way less extreme than injectables—vitamin C serum and retinol cream. Vitamin C is actually a cofactor for healthy collagen production, as it helps to stimulate your skin to create collagen whereas retinol treatments help to increase cell turnover for smoother skin. TruSkin C Serum from Amazon is designed to target common signs of aging, like dark spots, in addition to ramping up collagen production. Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair is a daily cream that delivers a concentrated amount of retinol deep into the skin’s surface to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Speaking of spots: Freckles, brown patches, and discoloration from the sun become more visible as you age, especially for those that haven’t been diligent in the sunscreen department. To fade the appearance of aging spots, you can try brightening serums and color correction treatments. Clinical grade products can be quite expensive, but necessary if you have severe discolorations. For mild cases, or to prevent uneven skin tone, try Keihl’s Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, which will visibly diminish darker patches and boost your skin’s clarity. Clarins Double Serum has a dual benefit of hydrating skin and brightening up your overall skin tone.

Lastly, don’t forget your neck and chest. These areas can show your age more rapidly than your face since most people tend to forget to apply sunscreen and properly hydrate their neck and décolletage. To counteract this neglect, consider specific neck and chest firming treatments, like Crepe Erase from Ulta. This intensive body repair treatment helps to restore dry, aging, and crepey skin on the neck. Also at Ulta is Mario Badescu Vitamin A-D-E neck cream that hydrates and firms the delicate skin of the neck and décolletage. At the very least, you should start using a daily lotion on your neck and chest, like Vaseline Intensive care for mature skin, or Nivea’s Firming Body Lotion. And don’t forget to protect the back of your hands with an SPF-30 hand cream.

Of course, it’s not just adding to your beauty regiment. Women in their 40s should also retire certain products. Acne-fighting treatments, astringents, and abrasive toners are probably doing more harm than good to your aging skin. Just like you gave up the short-shorts and graphic tees of your 20s, it’s time to let go of the skincare products that are no longer serving you and look to more sophisticated skincare solutions.
