Sara E. Winder, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, in her hometown of Williamsport, the same place where her story began on June 28, 1943. Known for her selfless nature and gentle spirit, Sara’s life was a testament to the power of nurturing and warmth.
Sara was a daughter of the late Lawrence Mahaffey and Sara Ellen (Bohart) Mahaffey Gamble, and she grew up under the caring guidance of her step-father, Andrew Gamble. She was a loving wife to the late Carl L. Winder, a sister to her late brother, Kenny Mahaffey, and sister, Joan Croucher. Her family was her foundation, and she carried those early values of love and family throughout her life.
A devoted homemaker, Sara dedicated her life to creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. Her four daughters, Tammy Winder, Terry Rook, Carlene Winder, and Tina Butler, were the center of her world. She instilled in them the same values of love and kindness that she embodied every day. Sara’s legacy continued to flourish through her six grandchildren: Phillip, Megan, Marissa, Brian, Mike, and Jason, as well as through the laughter and joy of her many great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Sara could often be found at the Bingo hall, where her presence was a source of happiness for her friends and fellow players. Her flower garden was a splash of color that revealed her love for beauty and nature, and her knack for solving word search puzzles was unmatched. Above all, spending time with her children and grandchildren was her favorite pastime, as she believed that family was the greatest treasure one could have.
Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sara’s name to the Susquehanna Health Foundation, c/o Susquehanna Home Care and Hospice, 1001 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
