Samuel R. Shaffer, 84

Samuel R. Shaffer, of Hughesville and formerly of South Williamsport, passed away peacefully, on August 21, 2024 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with COPD.

Born October 3, 1940 in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Clarence and Florence (Jackson) Shaffer. He attended South Williamsport schools and served honorably in the US Army. Sam was a truck driver for 40+ years for various terminals and retired from Lucas Trucking.

Sam was a gifted athlete playing softball for many years. He was a member of White Deer Golf Course. He was an accomplished bowler attaining four 300 games and two 800 three game series awards. Sam coached his three sons in Little League throughout the 1970s. He was the chairman of the Williamsport National Airshow in 1984.

Sam was a life member of the Independent Fire Department in South Williamsport for over 40 years, serving on various line officer positions and was the Fire Chief in 1978. He was a member of the Muncy Valley Moose Lodge #866 in Hughesville, and the American Legion Post 617 in South Williamsport. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams. He also enjoyed spending time at the river lots in the summer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: George Shaffer (while held as a war prisoner in Korea) and Wilson Shaffer; sister: Dorothy Dowling; son-in-law: Major Robert P. Wentzel; and daughter-in-law: Joyce Shaffer.

Surviving are his children: Craig (Diane) Shaffer of South Williamsport, Wendy Wentzel of Hughesville, Scott (Becky) Shaffer of South Williamsport, and Steven Shaffer, with whom he resided with in Hughesville; six grandchildren: Michael Shaffer, Matthew Shaffer, Marc Shaffer, Rachael Wentzel, Robert Wentzel, and Samuel B. Shaffer; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister: Mary Flook of Loyalsock Township.

Per Sam’s wishes there will be no services. If desired, any donations in Sam’s memory can be made to the Muncy Valley Moose #866 or American Legion Post 617 SAL.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
