Roger S. Wertz, 90, a resident of Montoursville, PA, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020 at his residence. Born Wednesday, October 9, 1929 at Montgomery, Lycoming Co., PA he was a son of the late Harold J. and Edith (Benfer) Wertz. He was the husband of Helen J. (Lasco) Wertz with whom he celebrated a 47th wedding on January 6, 2020.
Roger was a 1947 graduate of Montgomery-Clinton High School and was president of its alumni association in 1954, 1997 and 1998. He had also served as vice president, treasurer and served on the board of directors. He proudly served his country with the US Army during the Korean War where he was a tank driver in Co A of the 73rd Tank Batallion attached to the 7th Division. Roger was employed for 15 years at the former Arrolet Corp. in Montgomery and retired from the former Anchor-Darling Valve Co., now Flow Serve, after 33 years. He had also been employed by Sun Set Ice Cream at Montgomery, the Betzer Funeral Service and most recently as a greeter at Wal-Mart for 16 years.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church and a former member of Christ Lutheran Church at Montgomery where he served many years on the church council, was secretary for 25 years and was Sunday School superintendent for 5 years. He was a member, leader and advisor of the Williamsport Area Luther League for many years. He was on the staff at Camp Susquehanna for 25 years and served on the Camping Committee of the Upper Susquehanna Synod for many years.
Roger was a member of and had served as Worshipful Master in 1970 of Muncy Lodge #299 Free and Accepted Masons. He was also a member of the Zaffar Grotto, Warrior Run Royal Arch Chapter #246 and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Williamsport, where he was Degree Master of the 27th degree. He was a charter member of the Montgomery Lions Club and had served on the board of directors of the Montgomery Public Library for many years.
In addition to his wife, Roger is survived by two children, Brad M. Wertz and Susan K. Wertz, both at home. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold J. Wertz and F. LaRue Wertz.
Memorial services will be conducted on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. from the St. John Lutheran “Brick” Church, 196 Brick Church Road, Montgomery with Reverend Theodore L. Cockley, his pastor, officiating. Friends may call on Thursday at the church from 10:00 -11:00 A.M. Muncy Lodge #299 will conduct a Masonic memorial service at 9:45 A.M. Military honors will be accorded by the Honor Guard of the Korean War Veterans. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the animal shelter or charity of the donor’s choice.
