Loretta F. Shimko, 78

Loretta F. Shimko, 78, formerly of Muncy and most recently of Montoursville, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Ohio.

She was born March 3, 1946 in Wilkes-Barre a daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Esock) Waskevich. On August 17, 1968 she married John J. Shimko who predeceased her on December 25, 2004. Together they celebrated 36 years of marriage.

Loretta was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School and earned her bachelor’s in education from Bloomsburg University.

She worked as a first-grade teacher in the Montgomery Area School District for over 30 years including precious time at Elimsport and Montgomery Schools. She took great pride in every student that she aided with the start of their educational journey.

Loretta was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Muncy, where she was previously active with her husband in teaching High School Catholic education classes, and counseling young couples in preparation for marriage.

She was an avid gardener, floral designer, and proud member of the Williamsport Garden Club.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John Shimko and Melissa Rose; two grandchildren, Serena and Nathaniel; and three siblings, John Waskevich, Joseph Waskevich, and Mary Dorothy Polakoski and their extended families.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter in infancy; and one sister, Patricia.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 15 at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St. Muncy, with Father Sean Carpenter, officiating. Friends and family will be received from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. following the service.

Private burial will be held in Resurrection Cemetery, Montoursville.
