John E. Whiting, 84, of Williamsport, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Rosaline T. (Sababtini) Whiting.
Born November 11, 1934 in Driftwood, he was the son of the late Robert and Margaret (McMahon) Whiting.
John worked for the Operating Engineers for 11 years and retired from PENNDOT after 23 years as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. John was a railroad enthusiast. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and working on cars and small engines in his garage. If it was broken, he would fix it. John was a historian that told many stories. He was also a proud member of the NRA.
Surviving are his daughters; Theresa L. Eck (Nnamdi Okangba) of Germany and Denise M. Whiting Shope of Chester, MD, four grandchildren; Meghan Eckert, Mark Eck, Katherine and Gabriel Shope, two great-grandchildren; Samantha and Aubrey Eckert, and girlfriend; Florence Graytok.
A Mass of Christian Burial to honor the life of John will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 22 at St. Boniface Catholic Church 326 Washington Blvd, Williamsport with the Rev. William Corcoran officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family in St. Boniface Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the Lycoming County SPCA, 2805 Reach Rd, Williamsport, PA 17701.
