John D. Miller, died Saturday, May 10, 2025, at WeCare in Montoursville.
He was born October 30, 1937, to the late Martin “Marty” and Kathryn (Nace) Miller in Williamsport, next door to St. Paul Calvary United Methodist Church, where he was a life-long member.
John Retired after 40 years as Classified Manager at the Sun-Gazette. Afterward, he worked part-time setting sale signs for Hodrick Realty and as a crossing guard at Lyter Elementary in Montoursville. Prior to working at the Sun-Gazette, John worked at Weldon Manufacturing in Williamsport, where he met his wife-to-be, Sylvia, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.
In his younger years, John enjoyed bowling, golfing (he had a hole-in-one o the #4 hole at White Deer Golf Course), basketball, baseball, and softball. He played in the city softball league and co-managed the American Legion Post 104 baseball team in Montoursville. He helped maintain the AYSO soccer field on Mill Street in Montoursville. John and his brother Jim played Little League baseball on what is now known as the “Original Field,” where his father, Marty, was one of the original Little League Baseball coaches and board members and served as president of the league.
John was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State football teams and the Detroit Tigers baseball team. He enjoyed watching his son and grandchildren play sports.
John is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Grimes); his son and daughter-in-law, Chris E. and Wendy, of Milton; grandchildren, Jeremy Miller, and Samantha (Anthony) Bafile; step-granddaughters, Erin (Lisa) Donahue and Rachelle Horning; great-grandchildren, Cameron Bafile, Theresa Donahue, and Waverly Donahue; sister-in-law Deanna Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
John is predeceased by his mother; father; two brothers, James of Allentown and Richard of Linden; nieces, Susan Kershner and Makala Ashmar.
Per John’s wish, there will not be a service. Burial will occur at the family’s convenience.
