James R. “Jim” Lakes, 76, of Williamsport, passed away Sunday, June 29, 2025 at UPMC Williamsport.
He was the husband of Cheryl M. (LeVan), who survives, and they have been together for over 50 years.
Jim was born on October 2, 1948 in Washington, DC and was the son of the late Russell H. and Gladys E. (McDowell) Lakes. He graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1966. Jim served his country by enlisting in the US Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was of the Catholic Faith. Jim had worked and retired from the Williamsport Fire Department in 1998 and then worked at the Williamsport Area School District where he retired as Equipment Manager, Jim loved supporting the Williamsport Millionaires and attending all the football games. He had also worked part-time at White Deer Golf Course. He was a Life Member of Lewisburg American Legion #182 and VFW #3428 of Muncy and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 970, Williamsport and the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association #22-1. Jim was an avid golfer and achieved his first hole in one in 2022. He also was an avid scuba diver who assisted with Milton Fire & Rescue. He enjoyed bass fishing, archery and riding his Harley Davidson.
In addition to his wife Cheryl, he is survived by two sons; Jamie N. Lakes (Shannon) of Coudersport and Jeremy N. Lakes (Katie) of Montoursville, three daughters; Carla J. Hoover (Eric) of Williamsport, Shelly R. Jean (Bryan) of Cogan Station and Christine M. Barnes (Tom) of Hughesville, 24 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, one sister; Elizabeth DeHart of Catawissa and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; Thomas Lakes.
There will be a gathering of family and friends 1 – 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Maneval Allen Redmond Funeral Home, 500 W. 4th Street, Williamsport where the memorial service will begin at 2:00 p.m. Rose Mabus will officiate the service. Following the service there will be a celebration of life at 505 on Washington Blvd. Williamsport.
