James R. Dougherty, Sr.

James R. Dougherty, Sr.

James R. Dougherty, Sr, of St. Petersburg, Florida, formerly of South Williamsport, passed away on February 11, 2019. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of William F. and Martha Bowman Dougherty.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Julia E. Dougherty, and six children, James Jr (Deborah), Martha, Daniel, David (Eileen), Donald, and Cindy Kiess. There are 16 grandchildren, James III (Shanin), Eric, Mark (Rachel), Daniel (Kelley), Matthew (Joslyn) Amanda, Brooke Micklitsch (Ryan), Lyndsay Krape (Chad), Megan, Tyler, Brian, Emily, Dustin Kiess, Julianne Duarte-Dougherty (Mayna), Owen Kiess, Alexandra Kiess, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Waite, of Fort Meade, Florida and his brother, Thomas Wolsey, of Baldwinsville, NY.

James was predeceased by his brother, William, his grandson, Jeremy Dougherty, and his granddaughter, Stephanie Dougherty.

James was a veteran, serving in the army during the Korean War. He worked for Canteen Vending Company for over 50 years, working in Syracuse, NY as a national supervisor in the 1950’s and as Operations Manager in Williamsport until he retired. His hobbies included sports, gardening, coin and stamp collecting, antiques, fishing, and time with his family. He enjoyed coaching Little League and East End baseball with his sons for many years. The family enjoyed many camping trips, especially to Watkins Glen, Raystown Lake, Sheshequin, and Hillsgrove.

There will be a memorial life celebration for James at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2019, at Spitler Funeral Home 733 Broad Street, Montoursville, to be followed by a veteran’s salute and burial in Resurrection Cemetery in Montoursville. Friends will be received from 10-11a.m.
