James B. Bitner, 84

James B. Bitner, 84, of Blanchard passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Mt. Nittany Medical Center.

Born August 31, 1935 in Howard, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Neese) Bitner.

Jim was a 1953 graduate of Lock Haven High School.

On November 24, 1955, he married his love, the former Sara Blackwell, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.

He proudly served in the United States National Guard, earning the rank of First Sergeant (E8) before retiring in 1995 after 23 years of service.

Jim was employed by Piper Aircraft for 31 years, being the last employee before their closure. He then worked for Sweitzer Aircraft in Elmira, NY, as a consultant for Grumman and finally at Brodart, retiring at the age of 78.

Jim was the owner of Bitner’s Garage in Lock Haven.

He was a member of the Blanchard Church of Christ.

Jim was the head of the Blanchard Christian Cemetery Association. He also served a term on the Keystone Central School District School Board.

He was a member of both the American Legion, Beech Creek and V.F.W., Howard, where he played on their pool leagues. He was also a member of Burgess Run Hunting Club.

In his earlier years, he spent his time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing and canoeing.

Jim enjoyed shooting pool and flying.

He was an avid sports fan, cheering on Penn State and the Phillies.

Jim could fix anything and was always willing to lend a hand. Many looked up to him.

In addition to his wife, Sara Bitner of Blanchard, he is survived by three children: LouAnn (George) Masden of Mackeyville, Jolie (Rick) Meadows of Lock Haven and Todd (Karen) Bitner of Blanchard; three grandchildren: Jessica (Christian) Gagnon of Maryland and JT Bitner (Katie Welshans) and Wilmer Clyde Smith, both of Blanchard; two nephews that were like brothers, Bob (Shirley) Bittner of Milesburg and Donald Bittner of Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Bitner; a step-sister, Mary Groner; and a nephew, Richard Bittner.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of his family.
