Jack K. Barbour, Sr., 84, of Montoursville, passed away on Monday afternoon, October 5, 2020 at home, with his wife and children by his side. Jack recognized that to enter Heaven, he needed a Savior and because he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior many years ago, he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born in Montoursville, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1936, during an historic flood, he was the son of the late Herman L. and Marian (Martin) Barbour. Jack is survived by one brother, Richard (Elizabeth) Barbour. He was predeceased by a brother Robert (Grace) Barbour and a sister Carol (Ron) Barbour-Bair.
Jack graduated from Montoursville Area High School in 1954. After high school he began work in road construction. Throughout his career he worked for Lycoming Construction Co. and then Susquehanna Supply Co., where he retired as a Project Superintendent, in 2011. He loved his work and provided an impeccable work ethic to family and colleagues. His most memorable “projects” included the Hepburn Street Dam and Danville River Bridge; he supervised the building of many other local bridges and roads, as well. He always enjoyed opportunities to meet people at each new job site, enjoyed his co-workers and continued relationships with many after retirement.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Dolores E. (Glace) Barbour on February 11, 1956. Married for 64 years, he was a faithful and loving husband. They enjoyed many special trips together which included London, England; Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and numerous trips each summer to Cape May, New Jersey. Other favorite spots included “Camp David” and Dry Run and Cabbage Hollow.
Jack will be missed by Dolores, who survives, and children David (Sharon) Barbour and Jill (Jeffrey) Barbour- Arnold. He was predeceased by a son, Jack “Keith” Barbour, Jr. and his widow, Margaret Conrad-Barbour survives.
Jack enjoyed photography and captured many of his family’s life experiences both on film and with photographs. He enjoyed hunting, trout fishing, collecting various items, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was adored by his grandchildren and affectionately known as Papa Jack or PJ. His grandchildren included Meagan S. (Christopher) Arnold-Bond; Andrew (Mikayla) Arnold; Julia (Ethan) Arnold-Barley; and great-grandsons Atticus Jack and Henry Robert Bond.
Jack played in the first Little League World Series, for Montoursville in 1947. He was a member of the Loyalsock Men’s Club, Life Member of Consolidated Sportsman of Lycoming County, attended Moreland Community Church and The Christian Gospel Fellowship, Iola, PA.
It should be noted that before his death, Jack cast his vote for the 2020 presidential election; if you knew Jack, you know where he cast his vote.
A memorial graveside service will be held October 17, 2020, at 1:00 pm at Barbour’s Cemetery. Everyone is welcome and please bring a chair to celebrate Jack’s life. Paul Converse, pastor of The Christian Gospel Fellowship will officiate.
