Gerald D. “Sam” Shaner, 94, of Hughesville, died Thursday, June 5, 2025, at his home. Gerald’s wife of 68 years, Glenna M. (Holmes) Shaner, died on July 6, 2022.
Born August 17, 1930, in Hughesville, Gerald was a son of the late Arthur and Emma (Clark) Shaner. He attended Sugar Run School, Hughesville, and the Kedron United Methodist Church, Strawbridge. For forty years, Gerald was employed as a heavy equipment operator and repairman for the Hanson Stone Quarry, Hughesville. He was a member of the Hughesville American Legion. Gerald enjoyed woodworking, hunting, helping family, repairing broken equipment and machinery, and butchering. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving for 17 months in Korea during the Korean War.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Shaner of Hughesville, and Susan (John Roberts) Shaner of Cockeysville, Md.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Eleanor Fry, Sylvia Fry, Zelda Barto, Donna Miller, and Jacqueline Woodside; and four brothers, Kenneth “Mike”, Lyle, Grant, and Earl Shaner.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Rev. GayAnn Gearhart officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Hughesville. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
