Gary D. Smith, 84, of Montoursville passed away Friday, June 27, 2025 at the Gatehouse.
Born December 6, 1940 in Sunbury, he was a son of the late Oscar and Thelma (Blank) Smith.
Gary earned his Bachelor’s degree from East Carolina College. His professional life was marked by a lifelong career as an accountant, a profession where his skill with numbers and meticulous nature were not just assets but the cornerstone of his success. After a remarkable 38-year tenure, he retired from Textron but his professional journey didn’t end with retirement; Gary co-founded Smith & Associates Tax Accounting alongside his longtime friend James A. Johnson, Sr.
Gary’s interests and involvements extended beyond his professional life. He was a proud member of Ivy Lodge #106, where he embraced the values of brotherhood and community service. His leisure time often found him poolside, savoring the simple pleasure of a sunny day or the laughter that filled the air during cookouts with family and friends. As the oldest member of the Bear Gap Camp, Gary could often be found hanging with the guys and sitting by the fireplace. Flying was not just a hobby for Gary, but a passion that soared as high as the single-engine planes he piloted. A member of the Textron Flying Club, he cherished the freedom of the skies and the joy of taking his family on airborne adventures.
Surviving are his wife Pamela R. Cupp; his children, Janet Bradley (Brad) of Delta Junction, AK, Gary “Denny” Smith, Jr. (Julie) of Brockport, Wendy Clouser-Pomeroy (Brian) of Montoursville and Christopher Cupp (Lori) of Rauchtown; 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and one on the way; a brother Ronnie Smith (Darinda) of Annville; his beloved dog Rosie and several extended family members.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley Cupp, a grandson Johnny Kirk, Jr. and a brother Keith Smith.
Funeral services will be held privately with burial in Green Lawn Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made in Gary’s name to Lycoming County SPCA 2805 Reach Rd. Williamsport, PA 17701.
The family would like to thank the staff at Valley View Nursing Center and the Gatehouse for the exceptional care provided to Gary.
