Eleanor Mextorf, 87, of Williamsport passed away suddenly Sunday, August 11, 2019. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Charles M. “Charlie” Mextorf on July 5, 2019.
Born September 17, 1931 in Brooklyn NY, she was a daughter of the late Hermann and Frieda (Rodenburg) Schade.
Eleanor graduated with high honors and earned a regents gold award in math as a high school student. She remained a math whiz, always impressing others with her skills for numbers throughout her life. She retired as an administrative assistant for the VP of the PA Gas and Water Company. Prior to her employment at PGW she was a secretary for the WASD at Washington Elementary and Roosevelt Jr. High schools.
Eleanor was a 50 year member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where she served on various committees and service projects. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Community Theater League, the Williamsport Hospital, and the Williamsport High School Booster Club. During her days with the Booster Club, she was known as “the ticket lady” for the 1984 undefeated Millionaires basketball team. She was a passionate animal lover, a couponer extraordinaire and, as some would say, a magician with a dollar. Eleanor enjoyed sewing, hand crafts, and preparing meals for her family. Her homemade sticky buns were a hit among all. She also enjoyed spending time with her husband and coffee group. Eleanor always put her family first, and truly loved her children, grandchildren and the family and life that she and Charlie made together. Her kind, generous, selfless, and resilient personality will certainly be missed.
Eleanor is survived by her five children; Kenneth R. Mextorf (Marnie) of Charlottesville, VA, Thomas M. Mextorf (Debbie) of Lancaster, Richard J. Mextorf (Katherine) of Hamburg, Nancy E. Wood (Keith) of Williamsport, and James W. Mextorf (Lisa) of Albany, NY; 15 grandchildren, Allison, Bethany, Kimberly, Tracy, Ryan, Christopher, Jonathan, Joshua, Andrew, Brian, Emily, Justin, Chelsey, Taylor and Evan; six great-grandchildren, Allan, Abigail, Nathaniel, David, Emma, Braddick, and one on the way; a sister, Frances Graeff of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat Madison.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a brother William Schade.
A memorial service to honor Eleanor’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 17 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1400 Market St. Williamsport. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service, and following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Theater League, 100 West Third Street, Williamsport, PA 17701; or the St. Luke Fund c/o St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1400 Market St. Williamsport, PA 17701.
