Carl Eugene Naugle, 91

Carl Eugene Naugle, 91, of Montoursville, passed away peacefully at his home after a battle with Giant Cell Temporal Arteritis on January 9, 2020, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of Jane Adele Naugle (nee Spitler) and the son of Harold Aneas Naugle and Anna Elizabeth Parks.

Delivered by his midwife grandmother, Carl was born at home on September 7, 1928, in Berwick, PA. He moved to Montoursville at the age of 11, where his family established Lycoming Burial Vault Company and he caught the eye of his future wife. Carl graduated as senior class president from Montoursville High School in 1946 and went on to pursue his career as co-owner/operator of the family’s business. Carl and Jane were married in August 1950.

Always eager to assist family, a friend, a neighbor, or a good cause, Carl served his community in many ways. He became a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 335 in 1949 and served as Worshipful Master in 1961. He received his 70-year service pin in 2019. He was a member of the Williamsport Scottish Rite and a Board Member of Bethany Lutheran Church. Carl also held office as Treasurer of the Montoursville Lions Club and President of the Montoursville Area High School Band Parents Association. In retirement, he was a dedicated VIP volunteer at Montoursville’s Indian Park for over twenty years.

Carl enjoyed reading American historical biographies, traveling, fishing and hunting. He had been an active (39-year) member of the Algerine Hunting Club in Cedar Run, PA. His patience and positivity led his friends to call him “the most optimistic fisherman.” Over the years, Carl and Jane traveled across America in their camper, and also shared fishing and camping adventures in Pennsylvania, Florida, South Carolina, and Canada with their grandchildren. If Carl could have it his way, all meals would be eaten outdoors.

Among family and friends, Carl was known for his good stories and his homemade ice cream. He looked for any and every excuse to turn the ice cream crank. He never met a pie he didn’t like, and every cookie tasted like two.

Although his sense of humor and the twinkle in his eye will be sorely missed, Carl’s gentle spirit and generous heart will continue to inspire those he left behind.

Carl is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jane, and their four children, Kalen Jane Schloyer, of East Longmeadow, MA, Kirk Eugene Naugle (Cindy), of Montoursville, PA, Kim Ilene McGee (Jack), of Montoursville, PA, and Kristine Elizabeth Frederick, of New York, NY. Carl is the beloved Gramps of 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons-in-law, Carroll R. Schloyer and Charles O. Frederick. He is also survived by his brother, George E. Naugle, 93, of Montoursville.

Family and friends will be received from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 19, at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad Street, Montoursville. A Masonic Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. followed by a memorial service, with Rev. David B. Letscher officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
