Alfred W. Russell, 95, of Loyalsock Township, passed away on May 21, 2025 at the Gatehouse. Born on July 7, 1929 in Williamsport to Angeline L. (Valenti) and Alvin G. Russell, he was the youngest of four children.
He was a 1948 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and held the position of Staff Sergeant in the air police squadron. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He returned to Williamsport and attended the Williamsport Technical Institute on the GI Bill, obtaining a business administration degree.
Upon graduation he worked for the Faxon Lumber Company for 14 years as their Credit Manager. He then spent 12 years as a real estate agent for the Wetzel Rider Company. He was the co-founder and part-owner of Loyalsock Firewood, where he worked alongside his son for 22 years. He was a past treasurer for the Susquehanna Lumberman’s Association. Upon retirement he worked for two years at Nevil’s Flowers.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church since 1962. He was a Little League Baseball manager Milo’s baseball team for four years and took the All Stars Champion title in 1966. He was an avid poker player, right up to the time of his death.
He is survived by his children, Kathy (Michael) Reith, Stephen (Ann) Russell, and Susan (Bobby) Kilgus; grandchildren, Jaimie Russell, Stephen (Zavina) Russell, Eric (Rachel) Reith, Mark (Leanne) Reith, Patrick Reith, Kelly (Cole) Brakebill; and Julie (Bill) Kilgus-Kwok; his niece Joyce Lee Dawson, who he considers her more like his sister; as well as 13 great grandchildren.
A service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital.
