Fifty barrels of wine, five half barrels of beer, and a small quantity of whiskey and gin were confiscated last evening when the police raided the Casale Hotel and Buffet at 138-140 Pine Street. The raid was made by City Detective John Andrews, Lt. Oreste Giglio, Officers George W. Compton and Jesse Fenstermacher. Chief of Police Louis Russie and Sergeant John Kaufman later went to the scene.
For some time, the barroom of the hotel has been known to the police as a “club” for which keys to the side door were sold for 25 cents each. One of these keys was secured by Detective Andrews and by means of the raiding squad gained admittance to the small vestibule from which a door opens into the barroom. When the officers entered, they found a fight in progress.
Behind the bar they found a siphon of a beer keg. When this was opened only water came from it. Upon further investigation another beer keg was found and there was a special way so that beer could run from it. The search was continued in the cellar and more wine and beer were found within it.
The police found a list in the barroom showing then names of many of the holders of keys to the “club.” According to this index there were a large number of the keys sold. These keys only admitted people to the vestibule and the man watching the door would look through an outside “peep hole” before admitting to the barroom.
