Williamsport Sun: November 18, 1925 – Cub Reporters at High School to Gather News

Twenty-three pupils in the class for journalism at the Williamsport High School, will do high school reporting for the two daily newspapers according to a plan recently worked out by their teacher, Miss Miriam Wendle.

The class has been divided into four groups of five members each with an editor heading each group. One week two groups will be assigned to the papers, one the Sun and the other the Gazette and Bulletin. The next week the other two groups will work at the school reporting, thus giving everyone an opportunity for practical work every other week.

The plan is to have these groups cover regular “beats,” as does a reporter on a regular newspaper do every day. The material will be submitted to the editor of the group and finally sent to the newspaper. It is probable that the work will start next week, appearing on Wednesday.

Although the pupils themselves are taking the responsibility for this venture, Miss Wendle will act in an advisory capacity throughout the work.

The opening of a class in journalism in high school was a new venture this year. Last summer Miss Wendle took a special course in journalistic instruction, and when announcing the opening of the class, a great many pupils enrolled.

The subject is a full-time study, embracing four periods a week and carrying with it the five credits accorded to a pupil who completes a major subject,

Later it is planned to have members of the editorial staffs of the two local daily newspapers and even some from outside the city speak to class and conduct instructional discussions.
