Williamsport Sun: January 23, 1946 – Annual Community Trade Association Shows Process in 17 Local Projects

With 28 definite objectives for civic betterment set up by the Community Trade Association, the organization’s annual report reveals that despite hampering wartime conditions, notable progress has been made in 17 of them.

The annual report of C.E. Noyes, manager of the C.T.A., was mailed to members today.

Included in the four-page compilation are not only the activities of the C.T.A. but also of its associated organizations — the Merchants Bureau and the Young Men’s Bureau.

Revealed in Mr. Noyes’ report is the completion of seven of the C.T.A.’s projects — flood control, new industrial buildings, new industrial payrolls, isolation hospital, livestock market, produce markets and railroad shops and yards relocation.

Virtually certain is the new Market Street Bridge, while progressing are airport and aviation improvements, city-county building, county institution district addition, downtown modernization, new grade schools, housing program, sewage disposal plant, stream pollution prevention and street improvements.

Listed among projects yet to be completed are an auditorium, building code, city beautification, city manager government, equalized assessments, improved rail passenger service, recreational program, river improvements, smoke abatement, superhighway through the city, and a union station.

Civic advancement during 1945 reveals the inception of TWA and PCA airline service into Williamsport and the prospect of the granting of a third line service between New York City and Williamsport to the west.

A downtown modernization committee reports detailed plans for remodeling and modernizing business blocks. Steam cleaning and painting many buildings area also contemplated.

During 1945 five new industries have located in Williamsport including Armstrong Furniture Company, Beadle Spacer Strip Company, Cobbler’s Inc., Davenport Plastics and Ray-O-Vac.
