Gazette and Bulletin: November 17, 1922 – Jersey Shore High School is Totally Destroyed by Fire

Four grim walls are all that remain of the Jersey Shore High School after the fire that was discovered at 6 o’clock last night and that in an incredibly short time was a raging inferno throughout the interior of the building. By the time the firemen arrived about 6:10, it was realized the structure was doomed. At 6:30 the roof caved in, carrying with it the upper floor. The fire was under control at 7 o’clock and was completely extinguished by 10 o’clock.

The loss is estimated at $60,000, full covered by insurance.

The school directors meet at 8 o’clock this morning in the offices of Jersey Shore Trust Company to devise ways to meet the present emergency. Churches have already offered the use of their Sunday school rooms to house the students.

It was 6:15 o’clock when the fire whistles blew, the alarm had already called out members of the Independent Hose Co. 1 and the West End Company. Trouble at the telephone exchange accounted for the delay in sounding the whistle. The fire had been discovered by William Hayes a few minutes past 6 o’clock, an alarm was immediately turned in.

The high school is a two-story structure and basement. It was erected in 1905 and is referred by the people of the town as the “new building.” The grammar school building next to the high school was erected several years prior to 1905.
