Full disclosure, I am not Irish. Not even a little bit. I have a 23andMe report to confirm it. But everyone loves to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day! Plus, my mom still insists on pinching people for not wearing green, despite the fact that she is also, not even a little bit Irish. So I’ll wear my green, and if I can find green beer, enjoy a pint (or maybe just some Irish Whisky instead), and enjoy the holiday!
St. Patrick’s Day commemorates its namesake, the patron saint of Ireland who helped spread Christianity across this island nation. While it may have begun as a religious holiday, eventually the fanfare expanded to transform St. Patrick’s Day into a secular celebration spanning the world. In fact, some of the largest St. Patrick’s Day events occur outside of Ireland.
While St. Patrick’s Day tends to cater to the over-21 crowd that doesn’t meant there isn’t fun to be had with the littles too!
So whether you haven’t a single drop of Irish blood, or if you are so Irish you bleed green, grab the kids and have some fun with these St. Paddy’s Day crafts! If you are feeling frisky, pour up some Leprechaun Punch to enjoy while you craft — just combine lemon-lime soda, green food coloring and lime sherbet!
Pom Pom Leprechaun
Materials:
– Orange pom poms
– Green, black, yellow, and tan colored paper
– Orange and pink crayon
– Googly eyes
– Glue/Scissors
Directions:
Start by cutting out the Leprechaun’s face shape. Add some hair, a smile, nose, freckles, eyebrows, and ears! Cut out a green leprechaun hat and glue on the black/yellow buckle.
Have the kids arrange the pom pom beard around his face first and then have them dip each one into glue to stick on. Cute!
Rainbow Paper Plate
Materials:
– Construction paper rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
– Paper plate
– Cotton balls
– Glue
– Scissors
– Ruler
– Pencil
Directions:
Use the ruler and pencil to measure 1-inch-wide strips of construction paper in each of the rainbow colors. Cut out the strips. (You can do this for each individual color, or stack all of the paper and cut at once.)
Cut a paper plate in half.
Line up the strips according to the order of the rainbow.
Put a little bit of glue at the end of each strip.
Set the paper plate on top of the glue, flat side down on the glue. Allow the glue to dry.
Glue the cotton balls on the paper plate half. Continue this until the paper plate half is covered. Let dry.
I hope you all have a Happy St. Paddy’s Day! Be safe and responsible. No drinking and driving, or if you are doing crafts at home, no running with scissors!
