Grit: March 12, 1967 – Japan (Lycoming) Asks Cease Fire in Vietnam

The Security Council of the National Model United Nations meeting Thursday through today in New York City, has passed a motion urging a cease-fire in Vietnam.

The resolution was submitted by the Japanese delegation, represented by Lycoming College. It also instructed the Secretary General to use his good offices to urge peace.

The Lycoming delegation also represents another country in the model assembly this year, an observer delegation for South Vietnam.

Approximately 150 colleges and universities are participating in the four day session.

The vote was 8-3 in favor of the Japanese-Lycoming resolution with three abstentions. Of the eight, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and Nationalist China supported the resolution. France was one of those which abstained.

The debate on the resolution was read by Barry Boskovitch for the Japanese delegation. The South Vietnamese-Lycoming delegate participated in the debate.

Kenneth Allard, Lycoming sophomore is chairman of the South Vietnamese observer unit, spoke on invitation of the Security Council supporting the resolution.

Fifteen Lycoming students are participating in the Model Security Council, including six as members of the Japanese delegation and eight with South Vietnamese observer group. Marilyn Thomas is serving on the convention’s operational staff.

John Bucher, Lycoming sophomore, is chairman of the Japanese group.

This is Lycoming’s 14th year in participating in the Model U.N. activity. Lycoming advisors are: Dr. Loring Priest, professor of history, and H. Dwight Wilson, associate political science professor.
