Williamsport Sun: September 8, 1933 – Women’s Division in NRA to Begin Campaign Sunday

The advance division of the women’s division of the National Recovery Act’s women’s army in Williamsport will officially start Sunday and will continue until Friday when the aim of the army will be to see a big Blue Eagle perched in the window of every home in the district.

Lieutenant General Bertha M. Maxwell appealed to the women yesterday afternoon at a meeting at the Lycoming Hotel of the majors, captains and other workers in the army and issued a challenge to make this great drive an unequaled success.

“We have a very justifiable pride in the women of Williamsport for the magnificent manner in which they have responded to the appeal for cooperation in the drive for re-employment,” Dr. Maxwell said.

“President Roosevelt has said that he believes in putting first things first and the most important thing in this NRA drive is for women to put the Blue Eagle in every window.

“Never before have women had such an opportunity to prove themselves Americans, not even the World War could equal the significance of this movement, which is universal in its appeal. This is just as important to the women as it is to the men, now it is up to us to keep it there. Our forefathers put the nation on the map, now it is up to us to keep it there. General Hugh Johnson has said that the one way to provide against failure is to make up your mind you are going to succeed. Let us work this week with success as our motto”

Colonel Nellie Watson announced the 12 districts with their majors and captains. A contest which is expected to arouse keen competition and enthusiasm has been arranged. The first block to finish a block 100 percent will have that fact announced through WRAK with the major and captain in charge and the number of houses flying the Blue Eagle.
