The new year of 1924 got a noisy start and hearty welcome to Williamsport and old 1923 was blown out and shot out and rung out, and whistled out with the old time gusto.
Even the Boreas took a hand in the New Year’s Eve celebration, the wind blowing great guns, swept down upon the city and heaved everything about that was not nailed down.
Walking on the streets was negotiated with difficulty, but the great gusts of wind did not deter the New Year’s shooters, who were out in force and had the time of their lives around midnight.
The wind however toppled over wires and poles at various points in the city, lighting circuits being put out of commission in some sections. A pole fell over at the corner of Fifth Avenue and West Fourth Street and toppled over a fence.
A number of Williamsport radio fans reported good reception of stations WEAF and WJZ broadcasting the chimes of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Hardly anybody in Williamsport went to bed before 1924 arrived. It was widespread around that considerable “wet goods” figured in the noisy celebration, but that was to be expected. All the whistles and bells in the town seemed to be in motion at one and the same time, and it may be said that 1924 was properly and sufficiently welcomed in Williamsport.
