Approximately $4,000 in city scrip is still outstanding, according to City Treasurer Ben C. Bowman.Â
The scrip is being held at the city treasurer’s office and will be retired on the redemption date, June 1934. If, however, taxes fail to come in rapidly enough to meet current city expenses, an amount of the scrip sufficient to cover the need will be reissued.Â
A total of $50,000 worth of the scrip in $5.00, $1.00, and $.25 denominations was delivered to the city treasurer’s office, March 23, and the first was issued to cover the city payroll for April 5.Â
In addition to issuing the scrip as payment for city employees, the city used some of it to pay local bills. City merchants also purchased $4,000 to $5,000 worth of the scrip to use in making change. The circulation of city scrip reached the high point, April 20, when $33,000 worth was outstanding.Â
Since that time the amount outstanding has been steadily decreasing. Virtually all of the scrip came back to the city treasury as payment for taxes. None of the scrip has been used by the city in meeting payrolls or paying bills during the last two months.Â
With the exception of two pieces, which came back to the treasurer’s office torn in two, all of the $50,000 worth of scrip is in good condition and can be used again if there is an emergency before the redemption date.
