Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week is March 8 to 14

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most widespread disabling neurological condition of young adults around the world. You can develop MS at any age, but most people receive diagnoses between the ages of 20 and 50. The week of March 8 to 14 is MS Awareness Week, which is designed to shine a light and enhance understanding of this debilitating disease.

Recent findings from a National MS Society study estimate that nearly one million in the United States are living with MS. This is more than double the last reported number and the first national research on MS prevalence since 1975.

“During MS Awareness week, from March 8-14, our goal is to let our MS community know that there are resources right here in Williamsport that are available, including an MS support group and a Walk MS committee,” Stephanie Johnson, a moderator of the support group, told Webb Weekly. For more information on how to get involved with these groups and join the movement to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, you can contact me at ithacadiva@hotmail.com.”

Johnson said there are a variety of resources that are available through the MS Society’s regional office in Pittsburgh. “Our support group/Walk MS committee that I mentioned are the other local supports. MS awareness week is designed to promote awareness and education of MS and how it affects those around us. Its purpose is to inform and educate people on the most widespread, disabling neurological condition in young adults around the world.”

The National MS Society has many resources. Anything from making handicapped-accessible modifications to homes, providing financial assistance with utilities, supplying air conditioners during the summer months for those with MS, since they are very heat-sensitive. The Society also supports those in crisis who need food and shelter.

The National MS Society has the MS Navigator Program. This program is support for people affected by MS. They can reach out by calling: 1-800-344-4867 or ContactUsNMSS@nmss.org or NationalMSsociety.org/navigator.

Walk MS will take place on May 9, 2020. It is the largest fundraiser for the MS Society, where all funds raised are dedicated to MS research and finding a cure.
