Mrs. A.F. Kiepher has given the following report of the recent luncheon given by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, to the members of the Chatauqua Club, at which Mrs. Kiepher, Mrs. D.W. Shollenberger and Mrs. G.F. Hartranft were among the guests. Two Wellsboro women were the only other guests present from central Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Kiepher stated, “At one o’clock Monday afternoon we went by taxi cab to the White House from our Washington hotel. An attendant at the East entrance looked at our invitations before the taxi was permitted to enter the grounds. As we entered the East door another attendant looked at each guest’s invitation. We were then ushered down a long corridor then followed an hour of waiting. We enjoyed the lovely portraits on the wall while waiting.”
“In the front hall at the top of the hall we came to a receiving line and were introduced to the President.”
“We were then ushered into the West Room. We next went to the beautiful East Room and in a few minutes Mrs. Roosevelt came in and stood on a platform.
“Mrs. Roosevelt in appearance is exceedingly plain, but charming in personality.
She welcomed us in a hospitable and human manner. We found in the “first lady’ a truly great personality.
She wore a figured blue crepe dress with a shoulder bouquet of gardenias. Her hair was dressed very simply, and on her feet were substantial black oxfords. She had no make- up on her face.
“We started back for Montgomery following the luncheon.”
