Gazette and Bulletin: December 23, 1932: Firemen as Assistants to Santa to Start This Morning

Many a boy and girl whose faith in Santa perhaps was shaken for a bit last Christmas will wake up this Christmas and will recover their faith, at least in the spirit of Santa Claus for the toys over which members of the Williamsport Fire Department here have been working diligently for the past several weeks will be in the homes of the needy to make a happy Christmas for the children.

Faces that have been pressed against the windows in which toys have been displayed will shine with smiles as they realize there must be a Santa Claus. There are toys of every description and every effort is being made to fill the desires of the children. Many letters written to Santa Claus by the children have been forwarded to the toy headquarters and wherever possible the requests in those letters will be filled.

To make sure that all of the Christmas packages are in their proper place by Christmas morning, the firemen, who are acting as first assistants to Santa this year, will start out this morning on nine large trucks loaded with toys. These toys are all wrapped and marked not to be opened until Christmas, will be delivered to more than 400 homes, where all told there are 1,000 children.

Officials who have been sponsoring the move are hoping that not one needy child will be missed. Arrangements for the distribution have been made under the direction of Fire Chief Michael E. Clark.

Working from lists prepared by the Social Service bureau and with the cooperation of Miss Bertha Fetzer, executive secretary, firemen have spent their “off tricks” for the last week selecting toys to suit the ages, tastes and expressed wishes of hundreds of youngsters.
