“If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.” – Will Rogers
Warm, golden sunshine streams into a window near my desk each morning.
This is where you’d find Mandy, and where my day would officially start.
“You’re such a sweetie-pie,” along with a pat on the head and scratch behind her ears — this was my typical salutation to Mandy — a mixed breed pooch who could have coined the phrase “cute as a button.”
She loved laying in the sun and always looked so relaxed and content as if she was sunning herself on some distant white sandy beach where the warm air was scented with flowers and the waves gently hit the shore.
Mandy was an old dog, and over the weekend she passed away.
If you’ve never had a beloved pet, especially a dog, it’s difficult to understand the range of emotions that occur when they pass away. If you’ve never had a dog, it’s also difficult to understand the amount of love and happiness they bring to your life no matter how old you might be.
To a child, a dog is a playmate, guardian, and confidant. To the blind, service dogs provide independence. For someone that lives alone, a dog provides security and companionship. Most of all, a dog gives unconditional love and doesn’t care about the size of your bank account, the color of your skin, or popularity. They simply want a safe home and affection.
Mandy was this type of dog, she loved attention and loved sharing it.
Part this, part that, and part anyone’s guess, Mandy was a 100% special pup.
With large soulful eyes, golden brown fur, and a heart-shaped face; just looking at her would bring a smile to even the sternest looking person.
Everyone thinks their dog is the best and the cutest. Mandy was all of that and more. And there were many times Mandy served as a morale booster on gloomy days when nothing seemed to go right.
It’s no wonder a dog is called man’s best friend since they provide us so much yet require so little.
If you never had a dog, you’re missing out on so much. And that brings me to where I started.
Do dogs go to heaven?
Between a dog’s wet nose and wiggly tail, you’ll find unconditional love, the heart of a true friend and companionship.
Do dogs go to heaven? They most certainly do.
Visit a local animal shelter; you might find your new best friend.
