Recommend Change in Street Name

A proposal to rename Campbell Street in honor of Peter Herdic, who was instrumental in accomplishing the incorporating of Williamsport as a city 70 years ago, was recommended to City Council today.

It was submitted by the City Planning Commission and would provide for changing the name of Campbell Street to Herdic Street.

By an interesting coincidence, the idea of honoring Herdic, whose business ventures led to the promotion of several of Williamsport’s most ambitious developments, has also occurred to Mayor Charles D. Wolfe.

He revealed to his colleagues that during the last six weeks he has been conferring with local persons about the advisability of renaming High Street, designating it “The Peter Herdic Boulevard.”

No action was taken by council today. It held the proposal in committee, pending an examination into the manner into which Campbell Street came to its name. It was thought that the name Campbell might have some forgotten association with the municipality’s early history that would make retention of the present name desirable.

Council did not appear to be unwilling to rename some prominent street for the city’s early benefactor, builder of the Park Hotel, the Weightman Block, the city’s first wood block street, and sponsor of its first transportation system.

Questions were raised about the possibility of renaming Louisa Street, Park Avenue or Rural Avenue for him.
