Mary L. Shemery, 100

Mary L. Shemery, 100, of Williamsport, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Valley View Nursing Center in Montoursville, just a few weeks shy of celebrating her 101st birthday.

Born November 26, 1925, in Williamsport, Mary was a daughter of the late Sillick “Pete” and Cecelia (LaChance) Steinback.

Mary was a 1944 graduate of South Side High School in Elmira, N.Y. Throughout her life, she was employed by several local businesses, including Trimtex, Sylvania, and Peters Sportswear.

Mary’s life took her to many places over the years. She spent time living out West during the 1940’s and experienced the excitement of New York City in the 1950’s before returning to Williamsport in the late 1950’s, where she made her home for the remainder of her life.

On September 21, 1963, Mary married John D. Shemery, with whom she shared nearly 39 years of marriage until his passing on August 14, 2002.

A woman of enduring faith, Mary was a devoted member of Newberry United Methodist Church and, following the congregation’s merger, continued her membership at Saint John’s-Newberry United Methodist Church.

Having witnessed nearly a century of history, change, and cherished memories, Mary lived a remarkable life spanning generations. Just weeks away from 101 years young, her long life was a testament to the many chapters and experiences that shaped her journey. Mary will be remembered as a kind and good-hearted woman whose gentle nature and love for her family were at the center of her life. She treasured the time spent with those she loved and leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories.

Surviving are her nieces and nephew, Mary Jane Baier (James), Kitty Russell, and Robert E. Russell (Lori Pepperman); and her great-nephew, Alex Russell.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Ramona Russell and her husband, Eugene, Elwood Steinback, and Leon Steinback.

In accordance with Mary’s wishes, there will be no services. She will be laid to rest alongside her husband in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport.
