A story into the realms of thievery by two 12-year-old boys so stirred a woman spectator in police court yesterday afternoon that she gave the boys a severe talking to after Mayor Hugh Gilmore had disposed of the case.
The woman did not make known her name. Instead, she cast hostile glances at reporters in the room. She left after the lads and their fathers departed from the court. She was still talking to the boys.
The boys, Jacob DiBella, an Italian of 141 East Front Street, and Henry Ross, colored of 333 West Jefferson Street, were arrested for stealing several bicycles from Memorial Park. They showed Officer Hobart C. Beck where the stolen bikes were hidden after they were taken into custody.
Jacob and Henry admitted the thefts during the arraignment before Mayor Gilmore. They had admitted they had connived to steal the bicycles during several swimming expeditions together.
Mayor Gilmore severely reprimanded the boys. He also asked their fathers to sign bail bonds of $200 to guarantee the good behavior of the lads. The bail bonds are effective until November 20. Both fathers signed.
DiBella explained that he was working and was unable to keep track of his son. He said he had not been home for three days and nights. The Ross boy’s father also gave the same excuse and admitted that his boy, too, had run away from home several days ago.
The boys said they had been sleeping in a barn in the central part of the city.
