An area of the Muncy Hills will be filled with the sights and sounds of giant-scale model airplanes the weekend of August 13 to 16. The Sky High Soaring Society is presenting this aeronautical event. It is part of their annual summer meet.
Giant-scale model sailplanes and giant-scale powered airplanes will be taking part in this meet. Their annual summer meet is on the grounds of High Acre Farm in Anthony Township. Spectators are very welcome, and local families often enjoy setting up chairs or blankets and enjoying a picnic while viewing the flying activity. The term “giant scale” refers to the fact that many of these remote-controlled “models” that will be flown are between one quarter and one half the size of the full-scale aircraft after which they are modeled. They’re huge! The busiest days of the four event days for visitors to view the flying action will likely be Saturday the 15th and Friday the 14th respectively. Of course, all flying activity will be weather dependent.
The Sky High Soaring Society flying site, situated on High Acre Farm, has a long history of model aviation activity in the region. Current landowner Mark Eisele is both an active member of the club and maintains the flying field and its runway as part of the much larger 300+ acre farm on land originally purchased by Lee and Kathryn Eisele in 1979. All sorts of model flying has been pretty much consistent through the years, including a time in the past when the local group Susquehanna Valley RC included it among several other places. The Sky High Soaring Society has been flying from the field for a bit more than a decade and is responsible for all activity on the site.
Interestingly, the High Acre farmhouse once also housed a model shop in the basement run by Lee Eisele where local flyers could purchase kits or parts for their airplanes.
“We owe a huge debt of thanks to the Eisele family for keeping the tradition of model flying alive and well at High Acre while we take our responsibilities as stewards very seriously. This is one of the premier model flying sites in Pennsylvania and one of only a very small handful of sites in the entire Eastern half of the United States that hosts giant scale RC soaring and aerotow,” Steve Pasierb, club president, told Webb Weekly. “It’s a treasure that our members and the many spectators who come to take a look deeply appreciate. Pasierb added, “We encourage any visitors from beyond the immediate area to add a visit to the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven to their trip and gain an even fuller appreciation of the great tradition and history of aviation in the Central PA region.”
A little about the Sky High Soaring Society: it is a remote-controlled (RC) model flying club that hosts four major, multi-day flying events — May, August, and October — that are open to all visitors and spectators. The club’s members fly all sorts of model aircraft, with a particular focus on giant-scale sailplanes, or gliders, and the tow-planes that carry them to altitude. Especially important in the busy commercial airspace over the Williamsport region, Sky High is a sanctioned club by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, and its flying site enjoys the special designation as a Federal Aviation Administration-Recognized Identification Area (FIRA). The FAA has granted a special authorization for the summer 2026 event to permit the sailplanes to fly much higher than usual, up to 2,000 feet of altitude.
In addition to this August event, the club’s annual “Warbirds and Classics Weekend” is set for October 3-4, 2026. “The Warbirds and Classics Weekend” has become a must-attend event for enthusiasts of model aviation and all lovers of military and golden age aircraft! Like the sailplane events, there will be many giant-scale warbird models flying, including fighters, bombers, jets, and much more.
For anyone interested in joining the Sky High Club, annual memberships are $100, with 100 percent of all funds dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the flying site.
