Williamsport Sun: June 22, 1937 – 1937 Class Give Funds to Install Radio Equipment

Permanent radio broadcasting equipment is to be installed on the platform of the Williamsport Senior High School this summer, J.E. Nancarrow, principal announced today.

It is to be the gift to the school from the Class of 1937 which graduated one week ago.

Members of the class voted to turn over to the school board a trust fund of $300 to be developed and expended in the development and improvement of radio broadcasting in the school.

The first step in such a program, Mr. Nancarrow said today is the installation on the platform at all points that will permit clear transmission of any program. At present, temporary connections are available for a single centrally located microphone, which does not always afford satisfactory reception over the entire platform.

Installation is expected to be completed by the time school opens in the fall, and will be the initial step of preparing every room for radio reception.

It was pointed out by Mr. Nancarrow that seating capacity is sufficient for 1,000 students. The enrollment for the term just closed was 1,750, so that each day there were 750 students who could not go to chapel exercises no matter how important or pleasant the program was to be.

The ultimate plan it was indicated, is to equip the platform so that any chapel program can be received in the classroom.

Such an arrangement would involve an expenditure of several thousand dollars and will have to depend on future gifts.
