Central Pennsylvania Fiber Festival Happening May 16th and 17th

We don’t often think about yarn and other fibers and the role that they play in our everyday lives. The organizers of the annual Central Pennsylvania Fiber Festival hope to change that.

In a bid to do that, organizers have organized and presented this Festival. The event was founded twelve years ago to support fiber arts and educate the public about the versatility of natural fibers. It also provides a platform for artisans to showcase and sell their work.

Offerings range from raw fleeces and hand-spun or indie-dyed yarn to finished items like woven textiles, knitted garments, and crocheted pieces.

A five-member board organizes the festival, and not all have a background in fiber. It brings versatility and different perspectives to the table. Some have backgrounds in raising alpacas and sheep, processing fleece, participating in spinning and weaving guilds, crafting artisan soaps, and operating fiber mills that serve farms nationwide.

“This is near and dear to our hearts, and we believe it is important that people understand how the fiber is harvested and what it is used for. These aren’t items that are going to wear out in a season,” Mike and Elizabeth Longstreth, two of the festival’s organizers and owners of Lazy Meadows Alpacas, told Webb Weekly.

“The festival’s reputation has grown as well. We have a vendor that just moved to Roanoke, Virginia, who said, ‘I am trying to get into some fiber festivals on this side of the country, and I heard good things about yours!’”

While not all attendees raise animals, many share an appreciation for handmade goods and the craftsmanship that goes into them.

In addition to fiber arts, the festival features woodworkers, soap makers, basket weavers, and other artisans. Most products are one-of-a-kind and made to last.

There are also a few vendors offering food items like maple syrup, honey, loose-leaf tea, nut butters, and plants, and this year, for the first time, there will be a local winery where you can sample and purchase bottles of wine.

To fulfill its educational mission, live demonstrations will be held throughout the event. These include sheep herding dogs, sheep shearing, spinning, weaving, bobbin lace making, and antique sock machines. Several vendors will be demonstrating their crafts from their booths. Everyone is welcome to visit and discuss the process and how they got started.

Vendors also contribute items for a silent auction, with proceeds supporting the festival’s future.

Visitors who bring a nonperishable food item will receive a free entry to the auction; donations benefit the Son-Light House. Daily door prize baskets will also be available.

Food trucks will be on site, offering a variety of options for attendees.

“We are always looking for volunteers,” stated Elizabeth. “No experience with fiber is necessary. We need help in all areas — set-up, tear down, and during the festival itself, to just help give vendors a break to get food. Most vendors are a ‘one-man show’.” If interested in volunteering, go to the website and send us an email or message us.”

This year’s festival will take place Saturday, May 16th, and Sunday, May 17th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds. Admission and parking are free, and more than 65 vendors will be in attendance.
