The “Jitney bus”, the automobile trolley, has invaded Williamsport. The first two cars to be operated by a newly organized company in this city appeared on the streets this afternoon. The cars ran on a belt line covering West Third and West Fourth streets between Market Street, the east terminus and Grier Street on west.
The “jitney” (five cent piece) bus originated in the west a few months ago and has swept rapidly across the continent, establishing itself in many cities. More than 50 cities of the west and middle west have taken up the business with great profit to the individuals and companies managing them.
The line which opened in the city this afternoon is believed to be the first in Pennsylvania and is one of the first in the east. The local service is known as the “Jitney-Cadillac” although the city Cadillac agency is in no way interested in the movement.
The second proposed line for which arrangements have been made to furnish cars in an express line from Newberry at 10 cents per passenger. This will be a 15- minute service and will run from Newberry to Market Square without stop. For stop service the fare will be five cents. Different cars will handle the express and stop services.
If the business warrants other cars will be placed on what will be known as the Vallamont line.
