Charles E. “Charlie” Herlt Jr., 69

Charles E. “Charlie” Herlt Jr., 69, of Hughesville. A cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend was called home on Monday, May 26, 2025.

Born on July 20, 1955, in Muncy, he was the son of Shirley Herlt of Hughesville and the late Charles Herlt Sr.

Charlie was known in the community for his ability to fix anything with wheels and then some. If something can be fixed, Charlie could do it and if not, it’s junk! Closing his tool box in 2017 at PennDot and “Retiring” only gave him more time to tinker in his own garage.

In his younger years Charlie became an NHRA member. Spending many weekends between Beaver Springs Dragway and Numidia Dragway, making quarter mile memories to be cherished by all.
As Charlie got older he traded his drag bikes for snowmobiles and was part of the Backwood Boys, assisting the Brantingham Snomads in maintaining snowmobile trails in Brantingham, Ny. He passed his love for snowmobiling to his grandkids, taking them for rides in the field during the winter season.

Outside the garage, Charlie loved being outdoors and spent his mornings hunting with his trusty deer slayer slung over his shoulder in his tree stand. In addition, Charlie enjoyed riding Harley motor cycles with his wife. Along with his motorcycle crew, Harley Charlie would put on an annual Haunted Hayride at the family farm, all proceeds from that went to the Ronald McDonald House in Danville,PA.

This man’s true love for engines did not stop here, he dabbled in riding trials bikes and even took flying lessons. Charlie had a green thumb to go along with his green tractor. Planting fields of corn and having huge gardens to make sure his family didn’t go without in the winter. Charlie loved his dogs and will be joining his partners in crime Dobie, Dakota, and Rascal.

Charlie’s helpfulness and love will forever have an impact on his family and will be missed greatly.

Surviving in addition to his mother, Shirley, is his loving wife Jamie Herlt of Hughesville; three children, Melissa Segraves of Montgomery, Monica Brungart (Jeremy) of Williamsport, and Amber Herlt of Hughesville; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Herlt, Sr.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest contribution in his memory to Bill Kauffman ATTN: Brantingham Snomads 6324 #4 Road Lowville, NY 13367.

A celebration of Charlie’s life will be held from 12-2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Hughesville Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc, 5069 US-220, Hughesville, PA 17737.
