Charles A. Johnson, 92, of Trout Run, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
Born on May 13, 1932, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Andrew G. and Lucy M. (Mattson) Johnson.
Charles was a proud 1950 graduate of South Williamsport Area High School, and shortly thereafter, he served his country with honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His dedication to his nation was a defining aspect of his character, and it was a service he always held in high esteem. After his military service, Charles embarked on a career with Penn Central Railroad, which later became Conrail. He retired as a respected Railroad Conductor and Brakeman, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment.
In addition to his railroad career, Charles was the owner and operator of Johnson Farms, Nisbet. His love for the land and farming was evident in the meticulous care he took of his farm equipment, machinery, and tractors. He was a master tinkerer, often found working on a piece of equipment or enjoying time in his garden. His knowledge of farming was not only practiced in his work but also lovingly passed down to his children and grandchildren.
Charles was a man of many interests and was deeply involved in his community. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Honor Guard and a lifetime member of the VFW Post #7863, Duboistown, where he served as commander. His leadership extended to his role as President of the Local Union 602 Railroad. Charles was also a member of the Newberry Independent Club and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 1. Charles was also a historian of railroads, wars, and local history, and he enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others.
Charles was a man who took pride in the simple pleasures of life, like cutting firewood and ensuring his farm was a sight to behold. His hands were rarely still, and his mind was always engaged in some project or another. He was a man who could fix anything, a trait that earned him the reputation of being incredibly handy. His woodworking skills were another testament to his handy nature.
Above all, Charles was a loving and kind man. His warmth and generosity touched the lives of many, and his presence will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He taught everything he knew about life to his children and grandchildren, and his lessons will continue to guide them.
Surviving Charles is his second wife of 36 years, Linda J. (Bacon) Johnson; eight children Sherry M. Ault (Rick) of Loyalsock, Sue L. Peters (Steve) of South Williamsport, Charles W. Johnson of Williamsport, Carol E. Johnson of Williamsport, Jeff S. Burgess of Roaring Branch, Deanna M. Burgess of Williamsport, Tanya L. Baer (Gary) of Trout Run, and Shawn M. Burgess (Heather) of Picture Rocks; ten grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice M. (Day) Johnson, his brothers Andrew and Robert Johnson, his son-in-law Shuman Miller, and his daughter-in-law Glenda Burgess.
