E. Stuart Congdon, 71

E. Stuart Congdon, 71, owner of Cady’s News Stand, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at UPMC Williamsport.

Born July 22, 1953, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Franklin E. and Bessie M. (Groves) Congdon. He played football for Roxborough High School, enjoyed sneaking into Connie Mack Stadium to watch the Phillies, and saw some great bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones at the Spectrum.

Stu graduated from East Stroudsburg University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Geography in 1975. He was an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. It was here, in the summer of 1971, that he met his future wife, Sally Fetterman. The two were married on May 7, 1977, sharing nearly 48 years until his passing.

Stu’s true passion in life was his role as the owner and operator of Cady’s News Stand, a family business which he and Sally purchased in 1984 from the late Bob and Dot Fetterman. It was at Cady’s News Stand that Stu became a fixture in the daily lives of many people for over 40 years. He was always ready to give advice to those who sought it, offer solace in times of grief, and celebrate the many lottery winners. He was a respected voice in the community, had a keen interest in local projects and politics, and enjoyed deep conversations and the daily interactions with his faithful and longtime customers.

Stu was also deeply rooted in public service with dedication to the wellbeing of his community. He served as a Lycoming County Landfill Inspector and a member of the Lycoming County Water and Sewer Authority. He was involved with the Montgomery Area School Board, Athletic Booster Club, and Jaycees. He served as vice chairman of the Brady Township Planning Commission from 1981-1991.

Beyond his professional and volunteer work, Stu was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, with a particular fondness for the Flyers and Eagles (Go Birds!).

Surviving is his loving wife, Sally (Fetterman) Congdon; three children, Stephanie Congdon Levine (Elliot) of Indianapolis, IN, R. Spencer Congdon (Brittney) of Rock Hill, SC and Sean D. Congdon of Montgomery; two grandchildren, Sophia Ann Levine and Benjamin Stuart Levine; a brother, Franklin E. Congdon II (Jane) of Flourtown, PA, a sister Nancy Deppi of Cuyahoga Falls, OH; and several nieces and nephews. Those who knew Stu will remember him as a dedicated family man and an honest businessman who loved his customers.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, April 19, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 324 South Howard Street, South Williamsport. A celebration of Stu’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, with the Rev. Jeffrey LeCrone officiating. Burial in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery will take place at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Stu’s name may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 324 South Howard St., South Williamsport, PA 17702.
