Velma J. Bixler, 96, of Lenoir City, TN, formerly of Williamsport, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Fort Loudoun Medical Center, Lenoir City, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. E. W. Bixler, on August 12, 2005.
Born December 18, 1927, in Strangford she was a daughter of the late Rev. Everett and Mary (Libengood) Stephenson.
Velma was a 1945 graduate of Derry Township High School and later graduated from Douglas Business College in 1948 with a degree in Secretarial Studies. Velma’s professional life was marked by her role as a secretary at Emmanuel Baptist Church and the Williamsport Christian School, where her meticulous work and warm presence were greatly valued.
Velma’s heart was always with her family and her church. As a pastor’s wife, she stood as a pillar of support and grace, touching the lives of many through her involvement with the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Her love for going to church was only matched by her passion for reading her Bible and cherishing every moment spent with her beloved family.
Surviving are her four sons Rev. K. David Bixler (Debra M.) of Williamsport, Randy E. Bixler of Madison Heights, VA, Rev. Ronald A. Bixler (Lisa M.) of Montgomery, and Mark D. Bixler (Lisa A.) of Colchester, VT; a daughter M. Ruth Scoggins (Rev. Ken) of Lenoir City, TN; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service to honor the life of Velma will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, September 20, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1730 Four Mile Drive, Williamsport. Burial will follow in Montoursville Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church.
